The town takes its English name from the River Usk - a name derived from an ancient Brythonic word for river which may also mean "abounding in fish"

Founded on the site of the Roman fort of Burrium, Usk contiued to grow from the 12th around Usk Castle. The Castle - originally built and presided over by the de Clare family - still stands today, with some of grounds and buildings now being publically accessible.

Thriving on the fertile banks of the River Usk, the town has continued to prosper, despite it being raised to the ground in the early 15th century by the marauding Owain Glyndwr. Regular farmers markets and agricultural shows continue to showcase the local produce, considered my many in the culinary circles to be amongst the best in Britain.

Winner of Wales in Bloom for an amazing twenty-seven consecutive years, and Britain in Bloom four times, Usk can boast picturesque qualities to all visitors. Beautiful floral arrangements line the cobbled streets that are home to many independent boutiques that hark back to many peoples ideal of what a small British town should look like. Not only is a visit to Usk a thoroughly pleasant experience in itself, it also serves as a particularly accommodating venue from which to explore the nearby Forest of Dean, Wye Valley, Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains.
